Drug Therapy used in conventional method of treatment:

5-Aminosalicyclic acid (5-ASA) agents - Sulfasalazine and other 5-ASA agents are mainly used for mild to moderate Ulcerative colitis. Sulfasalazine can impair folate absorption and patients should be supplemented with folic acid.

Glucocorticoids - These are mainly indicated in moderate to severe ulcerative colitis patients or patients not responding to 5-ASA agents. Other drugs- Azathioprine and 6-mercaptopurine are used in management of glucocorticoid dependent ulcerative colitis.

Surgical Therapy - Surgery is indicated in patients who don’t respond to medical management. Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis is most frequently done surgical intervention.
