Similar Conditions
Tonsillitis
  • Tonsils and Adenoids are located very close to each other and perform similar roles of defense in human body. So it is very natural for them to get infected.
  • One should remember though that it is easy to see enlarged tonsils through open mouth, but enlarged adenoids are not visible that way.
Swollen Lymph Nodes
  • The lymphatic systems work in a comprehensive manner along with body's defense system. It provides channel for interstitial fluid to mix in blood circulation through lymph. Lymph is similar to blood plasma and contains white blood cells and lymphocytes. So while draining infectious sites, the lymph nodes which are nothing but collections of organized lymphoid tissue, get infected and swell up.
  • When lymph nodes in the neck get enlarged, they can mimic adenoid disease.
Pharyngitis
  • Severe throat infection may result in symptoms similar to adenoiditis.
  • This includes common symptoms of redness, swelling, pain and irritation, though difficulty in breathing is generally not seen here.
