Diagnosis and Tests

Certain tests are very useful to diagnose Osteoarthritis.

  • History- History of pain, swelling, stiffness given by patient is important to diagnose OA.
  • Clinical Examination- A careful examination of joint by qualified physician may establish clinical diagnosis of OA.
  • Radiography (X Ray) - It is the commonest test to diagnose Osteoarthritis. Certain changes like joint gap narrowing, formation of new bone tissue at surroundings, cysts and osteophytes formation is present in X Ray film of OA patients.
  • MRI joint- If diagnosis is not established by X Ray then advanced tests like MRI of joints may be required.
