  • Age: Advanced age acts as risk factor for OA.

  • Gender: OA is more common in women.
  • Injuries: Repeated injuries to joint may act as risk factor in OA as in sports.

  • Overuse: Repeated overuse of joints like in certain occupations or sport activities may cause OA in long run due to cartilage loss. Activities like kneeling, squatting, climbing stairs are risk factors for OA especially if repetitive and prolonged.
  • Deformities: Inborn bone deformities or malformation may result in OA.
  • Obesity: Being overweight may cause undue pressure on joints resulting in OA risk.
  • Disease Condition: Certain diseases like hypothyroidism, Paget’s disease, gout may cause OA.
  • Work Condition: Jobs or work which affects joints are also responsible. For example, in case of housemaids cleaning and wiping floors cause tremendous pressure on knees.
