Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

You may not notice any signs or symptoms of having high blood pressure, because your organs can resist and adapt to increased pressure for long time.

Most often, high blood pressure is detected when you visit your doctor for some other illness. Some people may complain of frequent headaches, but a high index of suspicion is needed to think that hypertension could be the cause.

Symptoms of high blood pressure include:

  • Severe and frequent headaches
  • Confusion
  • Vision problems
  • Increasing chest pain
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Nosebleeds
  • Swelling in legs or whole body

Hypertension can translate into a medical emergency called Malignant Hypertension. The symptoms of high blood pressure of this type include impairment in one or more systems of the body, commonly renal system and cardiovascular system.

Consult a doctor at the earliest if you develop any of the following symptoms of high blood pressure:

  • Disturbances in vision
  • Severe headache with vomiting
  • Acute breathlessness
  • Severe chest pain
  • Blood in urine
  • Abnormal sensations and agitation
