Symptoms of Acne vulgaris

Symptoms of Acne are characterized by blackheads, whiteheads, pustules, and nodules in areas rich in sweat glands like face, upper chest and back.

Papules and pustules are raised eruptions with inflammation. The face may be the only involved skin surface, but the chest, back, and upper arms are often involved.

In comedonal acne, patients develop blackheads or whiteheads but may not develop other symptoms of Acne like inflammatory papules or nodules.

There are mainly 4 types of Acne:

  • Mild Acne: This is characterized by few blackheads and a few papulopustules.
  • Moderate Acne: Symptoms of Acne of this type has both whiteheads and blackheads with inflammatory papules, and pustules.
  • Papulopustular: These eruptions are slightly more than the moderate type, having inflammatory lesions and large nodules greater than 5 mm in diameter and tend to leave scars.
  • Severe: This type of acne is characterized by multiple large deep black and whiteheads and papulopustules, along with cysts. They are painful and scar the skin.
