  • 2 My child is suffering from Tonsillitis. Can I send him/her to school?

Gauge how well your child looks and feels. If he / she is running a high temperature, is weak and irritable, home rest would be a better option. However, if the attack seems mild, and there is no fever or weakness, you may send him / her to school, provided your child follows some simple measures:

    • They should avoid sharing their handkerchiefs, napkins, spoons, food plates with other children.
    • They must be instructed to wash their hands regularly with soap to minimize chances of re-infection.

  • 4 My child has Tonsillitis and our family physician has recommended us to opt for surgical removal of tonsils. Is Surgery the only option for permanent relief?

Tonsils help the body in its defence against bacteria and viruses by forming antibodies, and so it is essential to conserve them especially in the first 5 years of life.

However, if your child is suffering from recurrent episodes of tonsillitis or at some point the enlarged tonsils cause upper airway obstruction or difficulty in eating, then surgical removal of the tonsils called tonsillectomy, may be necessary.

The procedure itself is safe, when done under a skilled surgeon. However, the surgery may have some unpleasant side effects like weakness, nausea, vomiting, ear pain and fever, as well as some major adverse effects like bleeding (because the tonsils are located near certain major blood vessels).

We recommend you to opt for a second opinion before you decide on going in for a tonsillectomy for your child.

  • 5 I have Tonsillitis. Are there any simple steps I can take at home to deal with it?

In the initial stages, Tonsillitis can be taken care of by following some home remedial measures like:

    • Salt water gargling- This acts as a natural antiseptic
    • Lozenges- They help to soothe the inflammation
    • Drinking warm water with honey- Honey is a natural, soothing agent for the throat. Warm water acts both as a soother and mild anti-infective.

But if the symptoms progress or become worse, it is advisable to begin medical treatment with a professional doctor.

  • 6 Can Tonsillitis be treated by conventional medicines?

Conventional prescriptions usually follow the rule of symptomatic treatment.

    • Pain is controlled by the use of pain-killers like paracetamol.
    • For inflammation, NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) like Ibuprofen
    • Antibiotics are prescribed usually in all cases of Tonsillitis, whether bacterial or viral.

If Tonsillitis is recurrent, persistent or if the enlarged tonsils cause upper airway obstruction or difficulty in eating, then surgery is advised.

    However, few points to remember:

    • Pure symptomatic treatment does not guarantee complete cure or freedom from recurrence.
    • Surgical removal of tonsils may permanently eliminate the issues of tonsillitis, but the immune system may suffer a setback since tonsils work in a protective capacity.

  • 7 Can untreated Tonsillitis lead to complications?

    • The ear, nose and throat are closely interlinked with each other, so any infection in one of them can spread to the adjacent organ causing complications like abscess formation (pus collection) or inflammation.
    • Tonsillitis can cause a certain degree of breathing difficulty and initiate snoring in children.
    • Trapped bacteria, mucus and pus may get hardened to form stones within the tonsils.

  • 8 For how long does a single attack of Tonsillitis last?

If untreated, an uncomplicated case of Acute Tonsillitis lasts for an average of 5 days, whereas Chronic Tonsillitis may last for more than 2 weeks. In many cases though, Chronic Tonsillitis is persistent and refuses to go away without proper medical intervention.

  • 9 My child's best friend is suffering from Tonsillitis. What can I do to protect my child from being infected by it?

FACT: Tonsillitis is a contagious disease.

But you can take certain precautionary measures to protect your child from it, especially if they are in constant contact with possibly infected children. HYGIENE is the key!

    • Wash hands thoroughly with soap before and after eating- Make sure that your child has washed his hands frequently and thoroughly with disinfectant soap or liquid hand wash.
    • Avoiding close contact with infected children (in your case, best friend) for few days.
    • Avoid sharing belongings with infected children to reduce the chance of contamination.

  • 10 Does throat pain necessarily mean Tonsillitis?

Not at all! The throat can become painful because of other diseases too, the common ones are Adenoiditis, Otitis, and Diphtheria. In Adenoiditis, there is an inflammation of the lymphoid tissue present at the back of the roof of mouth. This results in difficulty in breathing and tendency to snore, and is seen almost exclusively in children.

Otitis is an infection of the ear occurring either as a result of spread of throat infection, or independently wherein it can spread to the throat. The middle ear and nose are internally connected by a narrow canal called the Eustachian tube that is a potential transporter of infection to and fro.

Diptheria is caused by bacteria - Corynebacterium diphtheria- and produces fever, sore throat, hoarseness, cough and bluish discoloration of the skin. Tonsils get covered with a purplish gray membrane.

It is always advisable to consult a medical professional to know the exact nature of disease you / your child suffers from. If you / your child are suffering from throat pain, don't wait! Start A Consultation with one of our Experts NOW and start your treatment early!

  • 11 How would I know if I am/ my child is suffering from Tonsillitis?

Usually, the first symptom that is witnessed is pain in throat coupled with difficulty in swallowing. Throat pain can aggravate on swallowing liquids or solids, and in some severe cases, empty swallowing too can bring on pain radiating to ears.
