Healthy drinking is not as “healthy” as dieting or exercising; but it can prevent you from turning it in to a calorie-feast. If you are a fitness-freak and a quaffer at that too, here’s how you can choose your booze wisely.


Alcohol is an almost necessary part of Christmas celebrations. So when you drink, dance and be merry this Christmas, don’t forget these helpful tips while choosing your spirit this party season:

  • Straight liquor is healthiest, that is when it is served neat or on the rocks. But please remember that it has to be sipped and not gulped. They are super-boring, but yes, vodka, gin, whiskey and scotch are the best when had ‘on the rocks’. Calories for these spirits range from 97 to 120 max, provided they are not mixed with sugary syrups for flavour.
  • Wine may be a little heftier on the calorie count, but the super antioxidant resveratrol takes it to the top lists. Resveratrol helps lower bad cholesterol, and reduces the risk of depression and cancer.
  • The term “beer belly” doesn’t come from nowhere. Beer is highly calorific and the bad part is that it is hard to stop at one as they feel so light. Light beers like Guinness and other stouts are good beer options. Stouts are mostly made of whole grains and have vitamin B12, soluble fibre and antioxidants.
  • If you love your mixers, opt for freshly-squeezed or 100% fruit juice to reduce added sugars. Dilute it with water or ice to cut back the calories.
  • Simple syrup with honey is better than plain sugary syrups, due to its complexity as well as higher antioxidant content
  • Seltzers or sparkling water over carbonated waters or soda are better options to eliminate sodium and other additives
