Causes of Acne vulgaris

Hormones: Certain hormones in the body called Androgens, when secreted in excess, contribute to the development of Acne. Androgens prompt the enlargement of sebaceous glands and increase secretion of an oily, lubricating fluid called Sebum.

Bacteria: Excess secretion of sebum promotes colonization of a group of bacteria called Propionibacterium Acnes, that infects the sebaceous glands and attached hair follicles and results in the development of acne.

However, certain other factors have also been implicated as causes of Acne, including:
  • Stress: Increased levels of stress have been seen to exacerbate acne.
  • Tight gear: Tight headbands, backpacks, shoulder pads and garments which restrict airflow and block sweat glands tend to get infected easily.
  • Cosmetics: Application of heavy cosmetic and medicated products, applying products that are expired or of poor quality are also well known causes of Acne.
